NATIONAL COTTON CANDY DAY

Celebrated on the 7th of every year, this day is for us to rejoice our sweet tooth’s craving at every fair/circus/festive celebration and it sure does get us pretty nostalgic!

Cotton candy (first known as “fairy floss”) was initially introduced in the early 1900s, and ironically, the spun sugar delight was co-created by a dentist named William Morrison and a confectioner named John C. Wharton.

There are a few fun things you could do on Cotton Candy day, such as:

  • Make your own Cotton Candy and try out some fun flavors!
  • Share the treat with kids around.
  • Go to a fair or an amusement park to get into the vibe.
  • Check out how creative people can get with the making and enjoy the treat right after!

Here are a few facts and some interesting ways in which cotton candy has been used:

  • It’s got many different names all around the world.
  • In the 16th century, court confectioners had spun sugar into threads to decorate lavish desserts and make extravagant ornaments to be presented on the table.
  • Spun sugar was tricky and labor-intensive, and it remained—until the advent of the cotton candy machine— a snack or dessert of the leisurely rich.
  • Contrary to popular belief, cotton candy is the lesser of all evils when it comes to candy and sweets (with only 1 tbsp of sugar in each puff – and less than 50 calories per puff).
  • A strand of cotton candy is thinner than a strand of a human hair!
  • Greenville chef Michael Granata perfected creating alcohol-infused cotton candy.
  • It has been used in breakfast, dessert, and cocktail recipes!
  • Try preparing your own Cotton Candy Affogato.
