The specific origins of World Beard Day are unknown, but it is believed that in 800 AD, Danish Vikings had a special day committed to glorifying beards.

  • To add authenticity to an official message, kings would attach three beard strands to the wax seal on the letter.
  • In 17th century Russia, Peter The Great encouraged clean-shaved faces. Those who didn’t comply were taxed 100 rubles a year!
  • It is also considered disrespectful if someone shaves on World Beard Day.
  • The World’s longest beard record belongs to Hans Langseth (died 1927). His beard measured 5.33 meters (17 feet 6 inches).
  • Most people think beards are cool. While there are a few who panic on seeing a bearded person. Pogonophobia is the phobia of seeing a bearded person!
  • Otto The Great, a Roman Emperor swore by his beard when he said something serious.
  • Ancient Egyptians dyed their beards and gold-plated them to display their authority.
